Kings Power + Jesus Power

The King’s Academy Sending 701 to Serve Around the Globe

SUNNYVALE, Calif, March 27, 2012 — The King’s Academy, based in Sunnyvale, will send 701 students, teachers, and parents to serve disadvantaged families and communities in need in seven different locations:  Mexico, Ecuador, Japan, Philippines, Kentucky, Los Angeles, and San Diego.  The King’s Academy has been sending students on service trips each year since the inaugural trip to Mexico 20 years ago and has expanded its outreach over the years.

Kevin Neuner, TKA’s Director of Spiritual Life, explains the goal:  “For TKA, the goal of service is not to go somewhere and simply perform a service, but rather for students to get engaged with local populations, get to know their stories, and see how their own gifts and talents can make a radical difference in the world.” Neuner states, “Our desire is for students to return having been transformed into a servant for life.”

This spring, a team of 506 ( 366 high school students and 140 parent volunteers and staff) will caravan down in 80 vehicles to Mexico where they will build 16 houses; renovate a church; build a school dining room, kitchen and kindergarten classroom; plus, host an afternoon “Kid’s Club” for neighborhood children.  The school donates and transports all of the building materials and tools for construction and all of the food to feed the tent city of volunteers for five days.

A new pilot trip to Guadalajara, Mexico, involves a team of 11 working at Hope House, a facility for orphaned and abused boys. The team will teach the boys drama, Bible, and English, and also run a sports camp. They are also building an aquaponics system for the Hope House, phase one of a sustainable food source system that combines growing tilapia fish and vegetables together in a fresh water tank.

A team of 14 will travel to Japan where they will team up with host missionaries and their local Japanese church to help staff and operate a Vacation Bible School and engage in evangelical outreach to Japanese students. TKA students will serve as day camp counselors for the campers and run the activities of the camp, which include crafts and games, plus Bible and English classes.

In Quito, Ecuador, a team of 29 students and staff will work with an organization called Inca Link and serve alongside missionaries and the local church, helping with construction projects and reaching out to street kids and children in a special needs orphanage through sports and a Vacation Bible School.

Forty-two (42) members of the TKA school community will travel to Kentucky to work with Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), an organization that has a special program designed to meet the most basic housing needs of impoverished families struggling to survive in Appalachia. Past projects include renovating the inside of homes to building handicap access ramps.

In Los Angeles, a team of 44 from TKA will partner with World Impact to serve the needs of inner-city communities like Skid Row and Watts. This team will host a Vacation Bible School for the kids living in the South Park area and complete a variety of construction projects that will support missionaries and young churches in the inner-city environments.

The San Diego service team of 49 students and staff will serve refugees from all over the world at a day camp where they will provide outreach and counsel to elementary-aged children.

This summer, a pilot team will travel to the city of Binmaley in the Philippines and work alongside the local church and citizens to clean up the public cemetery and help rebuild homes destroyed by recent storms.

The mission of The King’s Academy is to transform lives through Christ-centered college preparatory education. The junior and senior high school of 900 students (grades 6-12) offers a loving, family environment where students are encouraged to grow in their relationship with Jesus, their family, teachers, and others. Happy New Year!!!

Dearest Parents & Students of Ignition,

Happy New Year! It has been a crazy 2010 and I look forward to 2011 with you and your family. I just wanted to take a look back on the year and celebrate what God has been doing in the ministry.

—————————————————————————————————————————

Looking back, I have seen His hand in many things that we have done. Ryan Ingram served Ignition for 3 amazing years and saw the ministry take off. As he left to be 100% with Awakening, the transition was seamless. Most major transitions in Youth Ministry is rough and we see a lot of drop off but there was none of that. Awakening is BOOMIN with Ryan’s attention focusing on college students.

We had some great “Grub Nights” for the students to get to know me. BRINNER was the best meal:)

The Blue Print Winter Camp was a great way to start the year. The video was good!

Small Groups kept truckin along. Drew Froese and I made a video that was “NOT COOL” but we thought it was cool. But we ended Small Groups with some amazing VIDEOS! WINNING Video!!!

We also had a great Senior Brazilian Breakfast and Bike Ride in Santa Cruz! Video:)

And then the NEW Freshman Class entered the building…wow! They are big, loud, crazy and some of the coolest freshmen in the world!

SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER! What a crazy summer Ignition had! We has some amazing interns! Caitlin Toews, Greg Larson and Katie Delgado made the summer run! They also DANCED? The summer started off with the Freshman Dinner. Then we went to Sky High Sports…most of you didn’t see this but Greg The Intern ripped his pants….VIDEO!!! We went to the beach and had tons of fun. The Trust Fall was a hit but Josh Osborn got The Trust Tackle! We had some fun Big Group Parties! And then there was Mexico…or FLEXICO…amazing trip! The Aztec was introduced:)We went to City Impact up in The City. We learned how to pray in the Tenderloin:) We got to see some students get baptized at the beach! The Urban Camping was a little weird but cool! And there was the FOOOOOOD FIGHT!!! Mike Buchanan was brave enough to take pics!!! Through out the summer we studied Colossians and saw God do some amazing things through the book! All in all, great summer!

We took a little break…

Small Groups started with the Oscar’s! We made some sweet videos and the students ROCKED their videos! Check out our BUMPERS!

Justin Beiber made a guest appearance! VIDEO!

Small Groups started strong and almost 100 High School Students signed up to be in community!

We got to serve Elm Street like mad this last year! We ended the year serving them Thanksgiving Dinner! We had over 40 parents and students serve! SWEET!

Mall Hunt was crazy! Valley Fair wanted to kick us out but we kept on having fun!

A whole lotta UGLY SWEATERS at our Christmas Party!

It’s also been pretty cool working along side Christina Papoulias. I sometimes give her a hard time and make her cry but to serve alongside someone so passionate about Jesus and students! I am blessed to be able to serve with her.

I have to say that we had an EPIC year at Ignition. We are just a small but BIG part of WestGate Church and blessed to sit under some amazing pastors and leaders!

I have to give a BIG BIG BIG shout out to all of our LEADERS that have served in 2010! They are the power and energy that has made this Ignition Ship move! God has totally blessed us with great adult leaders that Love Jesus and Love Students!

Please, Parents, if you are not involved in Parent Prayer, get involved. There is power in prayer!

I am excited for 2011 and what God has in store for Ignition, students, families and our leaders. Please PRAY that we rely on God to empower us to keep this ship going. We have some great things planned for Ignition and your students! PRAY that we stay sensitive to His voice and His leading…

Thank you for everything and all your support! I am blessed to be here at WestGate Church serving and leading! Amazing community!
